New Music: Brother Ali - Us
Brother Ali is the last result you would expect coming out of a large albino Muslim. That a lone makes it worth the price of admission. Us continues the meaningful story-telling laid forth on previous releases, and continues to show why this Minneapolis MC is a rare treat indeed.
With a populist take on issues ranging from slavery to divorce, Brother Ali explores the areas wherever his troubled soul feels like taking him. Some slightly overly-preachy parts of course come to pass, but it is delivered in such an accessible way courtesy of one “bad motherfucker”. From Chuck D’s opening onward, the span of subjects spewed over ANT’s production are oftentimes as introspective as they are self-serving swagger, but a smooth balance between sociopolitical commentary and braggadocio is struck.
This indie-rapper has a lot to say and does it well, being less preachy then most “street preachers” around.
